We support teaching and learning at Viadrina.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (ZLL) supports teaching and learning at the university as a central unit. In accordance with the university's mission statement on teaching, and together with the faculties as well as central institutions, we develop support structures and offers that help students with the preparation for university and during their studies. We provide seminars and workshops on key competencies, practical and soft skills, learning materials and tools for self-organized learning, as well as advice on individual needs. The aim is to provide the best possible support for studying and to prepare students for their professional life. ⇒ Offers for students.

Additionally, the ZLL supports teachers in the conception of courses and offers didactic and organizational assistance and further training. We provide teaching material, technical guidance, and online resources. As a research-based institution, the ZLL is active in regional and international networks and transfers research results back to the university.

Workshop for teaching staff: Beyond the Rubric: Alternative Approaches to Grading

Workshops

July 27th, 2023 14:00-15:00 Online (no registration needed)
Zoom Link

Rubrics are an effective tool for making your grading criteria clear. However, many other strategies exist. These approaches received renewed attention during the pandemic amidst pedagogical experiments to foster inclusivity, reduce stress, and motivate students online. In this short workshop, you will learn three popular new approaches to grading: specifications grading (in which students receive pass/fail grades), ungrading (in which students help set the evaluation criteria for their work), and contract grading (in which the writing process, not the product, is rewarded with a grade). We will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each, including how the approaches are put to use in different disciplines. Leave with at least one idea you can incorporate into your grading practices

Application of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA) accepted by the European Commission

Logo ERUAWith the new funding of the European Commission, Viadrina becomes a full member of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), will develop close institutional partnerships, promote further internationalization and implement various activities, e.g. in the field of teaching, research as well as student engagement.
Congratulations, Viadrina!

Small Teaching Workshop Series - for Teaching Staff

Poster Small Teaching

Small intervention, big impact - this is the concept of small teaching (Lang, 2019; Flower and Lang, 2021). Instead of turning everything upside down, you can improve teaching more effectively - without spending a lot of time - by taking small steps. In this series of short workshops, you will get tips and tricks around active teaching and collect ideas that can be immediately implemented in your own teaching. The workshops can be attended as often as you like and can be credited within the didactics certificate.
