Empowerment workshop for students affected by racism
An empowerment workshop for BIPoCs (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students
date: 18th of November 2022 time: 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. location: Gästehaus, Sophienstr. 6, 15230 Frankfurt (Oder)
This workshop invites the participants to take a break from everyday hustle and explore sources of strength and power while dealing with everyday racism. We want to create a safer space and address personal experiences in the context of societal power relations and structures, raise awareness of discrimination and uncover entrenched, interdependent structures that reinforce discriminatory experiences.
The workshop will contain biographical work, elements of awareness methods like meditation, and theoretical inputs on structural racism and intersectionality.
It is based on a concept of empowerment, which is understood as a resource-oriented approach that is critical of power relations, and which has its roots in the Black and feminist movements in 1960s USA, and connects with anti-colonial movements of the Global South. At the same time, it is considered that the concept of empowerment is interwoven with colonial historical constructions of power asymmetries, which are strongly imprinted on our socio-political structures.
