The course will contribute to a better understanding of the political, social, and cultural transformations that have characterized Central and Eastern Europe since 1945 with a focus on civil society. The seminar is divided into three parts: First, we will explore the concept of civil society and evaluate whether, and to what extent, the Soviet/Socialist experience has influenced its development in the region. Second, we will examine concrete forms of dissent and subcultural movements in the Eastern Bloc that paved the way for post-communist political transitions. Third, we will analyze civil society dynamics in the former Soviet republics, with particular emphasis on the Color Revolutions and the Maidan Revolution.
