Sommersemester 2025

European Culture. Music, National Identity, and Mobilization

6 ECTS

MES: GM1 Einführung europäische Geschichte

This seminar deepens students' understanding of European cultures, with a particular emphasis on the central role played by music in identity formation and mobilization. The course is structured into three distinct parts. In the first part, we explore the ideological nature of music and how it actively supports social movements and connects to their cognitive frameworks. The course investigates the fine line between national and nationalist music, examining how music influences and reflects national identities. It also examines music's role in shaping local, (trans)national, and global identities across European societies. The discussion then extends to the exploration of music used by radical movements, including the expressive revolutions of the late 1960s in Italy and the Netherlands, as well as the White Power Music Scene in Greece, France, and Sweden. In the final part, we assess more recent phenomena, such as the musical expressions of migrant communities in Germany and the role of the Eurovision Song Contest in shaping social and political identities across Europe.

EU’s External Promotion of Democracy and Human Rights

3/6/9 ECTS

MES: WPM 1: Regieren in Europa

The course offers a critical overview of the historical development characterizing the EU discourses, policies, and practices in the field of human rights and democracy in the past two decades. It aims at providing insights into the process of creation of a European consensus around the meaning of “democracy” and “human rights” in development as well as the role of civil society in this framework. The course familiarizes students with the core features and the underlying logic of the European approach, while integrating current theoretical debates, including decolonial discourse. Through selected case studies on the EU's promotion of democracy and human rights in Central Asia, the course examines the main outcomes but also the limits of the EU engagement on the ground. Particular attention is given to the projects implemented by EU-funded civil society organizations in the region and to the (European) visions, values and practices that were spread.

Social Research Methods: Investigating Civil Society and Civic Engagement

6/9 ECTS

MES: Zentralbereich Kultur //  Zentralbereich Politik

This seminar offers an introduction to qualitative research methods while exploring the role of civil society and civic engagement in the European context. It begins with introductory sessions that familiarize students with the research process, covering key stages such as formulating research questions, selecting appropriate methods, and analyzing data. The course places special emphasis on qualitative methods, including interviews, focus groups, and ethnography. In addition to developing research skills, students will explore various forms of civil society and civic engagement while examining controversial issues and limitations in contemporary theoretical debates. To allow students to apply their methodological knowledge in a real-world setting, we will undertake research in Frankfurt/Oder, mapping civil society and civic engagement in the city. Through small group projects, they will develop, conduct and present their studies, linking theory with empirical research. Opportunities for peer feedback and supervision will also be integrated into the course.
