30 Years Viadrina - Exhibitions, discussions and seminars offer a look back and into the future

30 years ago, on July 15, 1991, the European University Viadrina was founded by legal act. In October 1992, the first students started their studies in Frankfurt (Oder) – directly at the Oder River and the border with Poland. On the occasion of these anniversaries, between July 2021 and October 2022, the European University reflects on the 30-year history of the university with a variety of activities and takes a look at the future role of Viadrina.

A new logo with a radiant 30 has been designed, the most beautiful photos from the history of the Viadrina have been compiled, flags for the entire city space have been hoisted, flower seeds for blooming blue-yellow have been sent as a small gift. For months, the European University has been preparing for its 30th birthday, which it wants to use not only for a retrospective, but above all as an opportunity to discuss its current role and future perspectives.

The kick-off for this was a panel discussion on July 15 entitled "30 Years of the European University - On the Role of the Viadrina in Science and Society". AStA Chairwoman Svea Kühl and Viadrina President Prof. Dr. Julia von Blumenthal were in conversation with: Małgorzata Kopka-Piątek, Head of the Europe Program at Instytut Spraw Publicznych in Warsaw, State Secretary for Science Tobias Dünow, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Christoph Markschies, President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and Frankfurt's Mayor Claus Junghanns.

Tobias Dünow used the oppotrunity to wish the Viadrina "that it really does everything to avoid becoming normal. We have enough medium-sized full universities in Germany. Viadrina only has a chance if it is and remains different on principle - that's not cheap, but ist must be worth it for us."

An entertaining journey through time is offered by the photo exhibition in main building of the Viadrina, displayed until the end of the celebrations in Ocotber 2022. On 14 printed fabric banners more than two meters high, around 560 pictures convey selected highlights from 30 years of Viadrina history. For the first time, these and other historical images, including accompanying texts in German and Polish, are shown in an online exhibition, inviting visitors to discover and remember. During the course of the year, picture galleries, videos and further stories will supplement the digital offering and allow visitors to experience the history of the Viadrina and the many actors who have built up and shaped the university since its founding.

Activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the European University also include a review of the history of the Viadrina buildings as part of a seminar in the winter semester of 2021/22, with the results presented in an exhibition in the summer semester of 2022.

The events will conclude with an alumni event in October 2022, at which the European University will invite its former students to return to Frankfurt (Oder) - 30 years later, after the first young people enrolled at the Viadrina.

Background to the history of the Viadrina
On July 15, 1991, the European University Viadrina was founded by legal act. In October of the following year, 1992, 460 students enrolled at the first two faculties, Law and Economics. The Faculty of Cultural Studies was added for the academic year 1993/1994 - a total of 1,100 students were enrolled at the Oder just one year after teaching began in October 1993. 180 years after the old Frankfurt University was closed in 1811 and moved to what was then Breslau (Wroclaw), Frankfurt (Oder) has once again become a university city.
