Vice President for studies and teaching

The Department of Teaching and Learning is responsible for ensuring and developing the conditions for successful study programmes. It oversees measures to optimise teaching and studies in all undergraduate and further education courses and manages the necessary quality assurance and accreditation processes. In addition to the Quality Management (Accreditation) staff unit, the department is also responsible for the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Student Advisory Service and the Career Center.

The research focus of Christoph Brömmelmeyer is on European economic law and insurance law. He deals with the functioning of markets, with cartels and the abuse of market power, with regulatory and contractual problems in life, health and accident insurance, with the sustainability of financial markets (sustainable finance) and with the distribution of financial products, taking into account behavioural economics.

Christoph Brömmelmeyer (born 1969 in Bünde) has held the Chair of Civil Law, Insurance Law and European Economic Law at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) since 2009. After studying law in Passau (1989-1994), he worked at the Chair of Civil, Commercial and European Law at the Humboldt University of Berlin (1994-2005) with teaching and research stays at the University of Wales, the University of Athens, the University of Paris-Nanterre and the University of Wrocław. After his legal clerkship (1996-1999), PhD (1998) and habilitation (2005), he managed the teaching and research area of private law and international business law at the RWTH Aachen University (2007-2009). Since 2010 he has been the managing director of the Frankfurt Institute for the Law of the European Union. He was Vice President for Human Resources, Law, Gender Equality and Family (2012-2014), visiting Professor at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (WS 2018/19) and Chairman of the Senate of the European University Viadrina (2018-2023). He is a member of the Insurance and Consumer Advisory Board of the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) in Frankfurt am Main and one of the two heads of the SIG Insurance Law at the European Law Institute in Vienna.
