Tenure Track

General information

The European University Viadrina is characterised above all by its internationality. Its excellent location - in the middle of Europe and on the border with neighbouring Poland - makes it particularly attractive for students and researchers from Germany and abroad.

As one of the most international universities in Germany, the European University Viadrina offers excellent career opportunities with its tenure track programme, especially for academics in an early career phase.

The Tenure Track Programme is a programme funded by the federal and state governments to promote young academics and create new career paths. These are intended to ensure a predictable and secure professional future for young academics. The Viadrina is characterised in particular by its attractiveness to international applicants due to its flexible structure with regard to the duration until probation or tenure evaluation.

After Viadrina's successful participation in the federal-state programme in 2019, the total of eight funded Professorships at all three Faculties and the European New School of Digital Studies were filled in the period 2021-2023. (Professorships filled)

Frequently asked questions

The tenure-track professorship represents an alternative career path to obtaining a lifetime professorship. Tenure-track professors are initially appointed for a fixed term and, after successfully completing two evaluation procedures, are offered a subsequent position for life.

The target group for a tenure-track professorship is primarily academics in an early career phase.

In addition to the general requirements under civil service law, a university degree and pedagogical aptitude, the formal requirements also include a special aptitude for academic work, usually demonstrated by the particularly outstanding quality of a PhD. The subject-specific requirements can be found in the respective advertisement text for the tenure track professorship.

You can find the job advertisements in our section for job advertisements for Professorships and academic staff. You can find them here.

The documents required for an application are requested and required directly from the applicants when applying online via our application portal. The addressee of the application is the respective faculty that has published the call for applications.

The tenure track phase usually lasts six years and is divided into two phases: the probationary evaluation phase and the tenure evaluation phase. The respective tenure-track professor can decide in advance whether he or she would like a probationary evaluation after three or four years. The evaluation procedure is carried out by the respective faculty. If it is determined that the candidate has proven themselves, the employment contract is extended until the end of the maximum term in accordance with Section 46 (1) BbgHG. However, if the assessment is negative, the candidate will be given the opportunity to comment.

After the maximum term has expired, a tenure evaluation is carried out. If the tenure evaluation is positive, the candidate will be appointed for life.
