Focal points
Strong individual research and interdisciplinary focal points
Research at the Viadrina evolves on the basis of disciplinary foundations and expertise in individual subjects. It operates in interdisciplinary collaboration and international co-operation and presents itself in a variety of both academic and popular media. In terms of content, it focusses on central questions and challenges of Europe's past, present, and future. The current profile focuses on phenomena of digital transformation and social change, aspects of the market and companies, the relationship between law and society, the consequences of physical and mental borders and migration, on war, crises and conflicts as well as the diversity of linguistic and cultural practices. All thematic clusters usually have a particular European component and often develop a special interest in Eastern Europe. In this way, they contribute to conveying Eastern European references, concepts, and experiences in general research discourses.
In addition to the Faculties, five central academic institutions (ENS, Center B/Orders in Motion, Institute for Conflict Management, Viadrina Center of Polish and Ukrainian Studies, Collegium Polonicum), eight faculty institutes and work departments, and three joint institutions maintained with cooperation partners (Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies, Research Center Sanssouci, Kelso Institute Europe) provide a solid institutional basis for research.
