The department is responsible for the transfer of knowledge from the university to society, business and politics, as well as for shaping the interaction between the university and the city/region. With a view to the living environment and university community, the department manages processes aimed at securing and further developing sustainable, equal opportunities, family-friendly and diverse campus life. In addition to the Equal Opportunity Department and the Diversity Management staff unit, the department is also directly responsible for the Start-up Centre, the Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer and the Hochschulpräsenzstelle in Fürstenwalde. The Vice President is also the central contact person for the Student Union, the AStA and the University Sports Club.
Janine Nuyken (born 1967 in Essen) has been a member of staff at the European University Viadrina since 1995. After graduating with a Magister Artium in History, Latin and Political Science in Heidelberg (1988-1994), she was an assistant in the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Cultural Studies until 2005; since 2006 she has managed the Centre for Strategy and Development at the European University Viadrina. First elected Vice-President in 1999, she has held this office since then with changing departmental responsibilities.
