Panopto
Use of Panopto for teachers
The new Panopto recording system is available at the Viadrina, offering a wide range of options for the uncomplicated and individual customisation of course recordings:
Outstanding features of the system include improved accessibility through automatic subtitling as well as easy editing and distribution of recordings. Seamless integration with the Moodle learning management system makes it easy to provide video files in Moodle courses.
If you have any questions, please contact the IKMZ at multimedia-support@europa-uni.de.
Panopto is a simple tool for creating, storing and managing videos. It provides a secure video library (video content management system) where all your videos are stored in the cloud and which you can share in various ways.
Panopto enables both decentralised and centralised recordings: Use the permanently installed technology at the Viadrina to stream and record events simultaneously, or use your own technology to stream and record lectures from anywhere.
You can record multiple sources simultaneously and easily find the videos using the Panopto search function. Use the Panopto browser editor to edit videos directly without having to download an additional video editor. Existing videos can also be uploaded and edited in Panopto.
Panopto ensures accessibility by automatically transcribing every video of your courses with the Capture Live tool. All recordings created via Zoom are automatically stored in Panopto. Video subtitling through automatic audio transcription enables deaf or hearing-impaired viewers to access video content.Other features include the automatic creation of intelligent chapters and support for multiple languages. If you have an EUV account, you do not need to apply for access to Panopto. Log in to Panopto with your university login details and select authentication via the LMS Moodle ("Moodle EUV"). You can also use the Moodle-Panopto interface directly. To do this, log in to your Moodle course and create a Panopto activity in the selected course section.
If you would like to receive live broadcasts via the central recording system, e.g. in one of our lecture theatres, you must complete an online application form.
Guest lecturers must complete apaper-based declaration of consent and submit it to IKMZ. If you have any further questions, please contact multimedia-support@europa-uni.de.
First switch on the editing mode and then add the Panopto block in the block bar. It is then important to provision the course by simply clicking on "Provision course" - a new window will then open for confirmation.
Then select the option to create activities or materials and choose the Panopto Video activity. Then save and display the activity.
After you have created the Panopto activity in your Moodle course, you can choose between three options: Select, Upload or Record. Uploading videos is done via drag-and-drop.
To create a video, navigate to Record, then select Capture (Browser) and click on the blue record button. A new window will open where you can record your video (pop-up window, please always confirm). Start by granting access to your camera and microphone. Then click on the red record button, confirm the pop-up window and start recording your video. Once complete, the video will be saved automatically. Finally, all you have to do is give the video a name.
Panopto for Windows/Mac (offline video creation): With the Panopto Recorder software, you can create videos offline. As soon as an internet connection is established, Panopto uploads all recordings to your Panopto account. To create videos with the Panopto Recorder software, click on the Create button and select Panopto for Windows/MAC. Install the software if you have not already done so. The Panopto software window will appear. When you open the programme for the first time, a tutorial will appear to guide you through your first steps in the programme.
Important! If you want to show a PowerPoint presentation, we recommend the Capture Main Screen option. This is because presentations may contain fonts that are not recognised or supported by Panopto. Disadvantage: The Panopto software will not create any presentation content from your PowerPoint presentation. We therefore recommend using Panopto Capture.
After you have completed the recording, you can either delete it immediately or upload the locally saved recording to your Panopto folder. There you can make it available or edit it further. You have the option of editing your videos directly after recording. To edit the videos, select the desired video file in the folder and click on Edit. Open the desired video file first and then click on the edit icon. To cut out the desired video parts, click on the scissors symbol and mark them in grey. If you cut out the slide in the lower part of the timeline, the person speaking will be displayed. After editing, click on Apply.
In the Panopto activity, you must have editing rights to edit videos.
Panopto editor: The editor in Panopto is non-destructive, which means that changes can be undone at any time. You can edit the video files again by removing the grey markers from the timeline and marking these parts differently.
Existing video content: You can upload existing video content, e.g. from Vimeo, to Panopto and then edit it, add quiz questions, add automatically generated subtitles and create statistics for it.
Intelligent chapters are automatic content that can be created for your video. Students can quickly jump to specific scenes in the video by clicking on the headings in the table of contents. You can (de)activate and edit this display. Panopto also recommends paying attention to the following points to optimise the Smart Chapters:
- Title should be at least 15pt font size
- Title should be larger than the text
- Slides that are shown for less than 5 seconds are ignored
Open the Select option in the Panopto activity. You should see your created video there and be able to select it by clicking on it. To make the video available in your Moodle course, click on Insert. This can also be done directly after creating the video. The last step is to save the activity. There are two options here: Save and add to course or Save and view.
After you have created or uploaded the video, you can manage, edit or delete it by hovering the mouse pointer over the corresponding video. You also have the option of creating folders and playlists
All recordings are available on your Panopto account. The video library allows you to manage and provide videos centrally online. If you use the Moodle-Panopto interface, you will find all recordings directly in your Moodle course under the Panopto activities.
Share videos: You can grant permissions to other users. To grant permissions, click on the cogwheel icon in your Panopto account and then on Share. Enter the name or EUV email address of the person to whom you want to assign rights. This person should have an account in Panopto in order to appear in the Add people and groups search engine. You can choose between a creator, a publisher, a viewer and a viewer with a link. You can change these roles at any time.
If you use the Moodle-Panopto interface, the roles within Panopto will be transferred from your Moodle course. To assign someone a different role as a participant, please click on Participants. From there, you can assign different roles to individual users. Keywords: You can define keywords for your videos that you have access to. Keywords are generated if the keyword appears more than once in the video. Timestamps are also displayed in the search results. You can click on them and you will be redirected to the point in the video where the word was spoken or shown on the screen. In this way, you can search your entire video library or just a selected folder. With your own technology, any room at the university can be used to start small recordings and streams. An application must be submitted to the IKMZ for the use of the building technology and services. The rooms that are available for this are:
Audiomax, AM 03, AM 104, GD HS1, GD HS2, GD HS3, GD HS4, GD HS5, GD HS6, GD HS7, GD HS8, GD 102, HG 162, HG 217.
To create a webcast with Panopto, click on Create and select Webcast. Name your webcast and optionally enter a description.
The webcast settings open automatically. There you will find a viewer link to the live broadcast, which you can copy and forward. You can change the preview image of the webcast and set discussions as well as the default setting for comments.
Click on Share and specify who should have access to the live broadcast. Then close the dialogue window.
The webcast is displayed in grey in the video library and the message Webcast not started appears. To start the webcast, click on Settings and then on Record.
The Panopto Recorder opens and you can start the live broadcast.
When the webcast is active, you can optionally add a PowerPoint presentation or a second screen as a secondary source by ticking the corresponding box under Secondary sources.
As soon as you start the recording, the link to your webcast becomes active and participants can watch the live broadcast and take part in discussions
Before you start a webcast, make sure that the livestream function is activated in Zoom. Log in to your Zoom account and go to Settings. Under "In Meetings (Advanced)", search for Allow live streaming of meetings and check that the function is activated and Custom Live Streaming Service is ticked.

6. go to the bottom and under Live streaming select Configure custom streaming service.
7. paste the copied data from the Panopto webcast into the corresponding fields and confirm with Save. You can start the meeting.
8 After the meeting has started, you can start the webcast in the navigation bar via More and then Live on Custom Streaming Service.
The browser opens and the live stream is prepared and started. You will then be forwarded directly to the link for the live broadcast.
The webcast is started and running. During the Zoom meeting, you can control the stream in the top left corner.
To find information about the number of viewers who have access to your videos and the total number of minutes made available to users, click on the statistics icon in the top right-hand corner of your screen. To access the statistics, you need creator rights or must have received them from other users (creators). The statistics are available for all videos and folders.
Inform the IKMZ via email to multimedia-support@europa-uni.de if you need support in migrating your recordings from another platform (e.g. Vimeo) to Panopto. Further information can be found on the pages from IKMZ. If you have further questions or are missing information about Panopto, you can also contact the IKMZ.

.Use of Panopto for students
Learn at your own pace! Use Panopto to watch educational videos and benefit from features such as personalised notes and smart chapters to help you learn. Panopto also offers automatic transcriptions and subtitles so that all content is accessible. Set the playback speed to suit you and customise your learning experience to suit your needs.
You can watch the videos either directly in Panopto or in Moodle. Log in to the Panopto domain or find the Panopto activity in the Moodle course.
Intelligent chapters: Panopto automatically creates chapter markers based on the content of the video. These markers allow you to jump directly to specific sections that you want to repeat or review. You can quickly navigate to relevant topics within the video without having to watch through the entire video.
Personal notes: While watching the video, you can create personal notes directly in the video. These notes are time-stamped, which means that they are linked to specific points in the video. This allows you to record important information, questions or thoughts that occur to you during the learning process. These personal notes help you to keep track of the video content and prepare effectively for exams or assignments. If you have editor rights in Panopto, you can create, edit and manage videos. To do this, take a look at Panopto for teachers on this website.
